Bowls History
Bowls has been an important part of the Yarrawonga Mulwala Golf Club Resort community since 1956.
The idea began in 1954, when the Yarrawonga & Border Golf Club decided to construct a bowling green to provide members with an alternative summer sport while the golf course was closed. With guidance from the Royal Victorian Bowls Association and the support of dedicated Club members, construction commenced.
The inaugural meeting of the Bowls Section was held on 19 August 1956, chaired by Golf Club President Dr George van Nooten. The first bowling green was officially opened on 13 October 1956 and was later named the John Gorman Green in recognition of John Gorman’s significant contribution to the Club.
As the game grew, the Club entered its first Ovens and Murray Pennant team in the 1959–60 season. A second green was constructed in 1960 and later named the George van Nooten Green, recognising Dr van Nooten’s support and service during the establishment of the Bowls Section.
Women’s bowls became an important part of the Club’s history, with the Ladies’ Bowls Section entering its first Ovens and Murray District Pennant team in 1969–70. In 1986, the Ladies’ Bowls Section began operating independently under its own President and Committee.
In 2015, members of the Men’s and Ladies’ Bowls Sections voted to unite as one Club.
Today, Yarrawonga Mulwala Bowls Club continues to build on the foundations established by its early members, bringing people together through competition, friendship and a shared love of the game.
