Croquet News: Winter 2022
By Heather Oliver
Heading into winter, our members take to the courts with jackets, beanies and mallets. It’s a beautiful sight to look down our courts and see the trail on the frosty grass, of the first croquet balls struck. The trail leading to the point where they lay to rest.
On Saturdays, players stay and linger at the courts to finish the week off by having a BBQ together. This social event replacing the Summer Twilight games played on Wednesday evenings.
Our Club held a Social Day in April, with players coming from several local clubs. The weather was great and many a hard-fought game was played. During the year many of our members travel to other clubs to play Social Days and Tournaments. Winter doesn’t stop play!
Cheryl O’Dwyer, one of our members, continues to represent our club on many occasions in Association croquet, Golf croquet and Gateball, at tournaments in Ballarat, Albury, Canberra and Melbourne.
Our thanks go to Chris Burgess and staff for the repair work carried out on Court 1 where a depression from a former tree had slowly been sinking. Our thanks must also go to all the staff who keep our three croquet courts in a magnificent condition.
Croquet membership is steadily growing and new members are welcome. Beginners can try croquet on Friday mornings, with no experience needed!
